My Journey to Improved Health

Taking Control of Your Health

Do you desire better health?  Do you have a 'healthy idol' that you secretly envy?  Can you picture an image of the 'healthier you' that you would like to be? 

The quest for well-being, which includes good health, is a 'life long journey' not merely a destination. The best way to improve your health is to learn as much as you can about the factors that affect your body, your health and well-being and what you can do about those factors.  

What is Well-being?

 

Your mother probably told you to eat your vegetables when you were little so that you would grow up to be big and strong and healthy. 

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, was quoted to say: “If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health”. 

The inventor Tomas Edison stated that“The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease”.

“Health is defined in the WHO’s Constitution as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. World Health Organization, 2007.

         The Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of  well-being:                  “the state of being happy, healthy, or prosperous”

Your mother, Hippocrates and Thomas Edison all had a common belief, that good nutrition is an important part of well-being. Just as there are many words that describe well-being, there are also many more factors that contribute to and interfere with a person’s well-being.

A Natural Approach to Wellness

The state of your wellbeing, including the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects, is the result of your genetics, your environment and the condition of your body.  Genetic and environmental factors can directly or indirectly affect your body.  Imbalance or distress in any aspect of your being can affect the other aspects. Each aspect requires the same amount of respect, attention, response and dealing in terms of well-being.

                                         

                                              

                            

How do the individual aspects of well-being impact the other aspects?

The BodyMind Connection:

Scientific studies undertaken by neuroscientist Karen Bulloch in the late 1970s revealed direct neurological pathways between the brain and the immune system.  Additional studies confirmed that the two systems communicate with each other by chemical messages.  PNI (psychoneuroimmunology) researchers believe that emotions that affect the brain can also affect the immune system response.  Anything that affects one aspect of your being can have a corresponding impact on the other aspects of well-being. 

·        Feelings (depression, loneliness, stress, grief) can affect physical wellbeing (weakness, low Natural Killer (NK) cell activity) causing illness.

·        Thinking (positive or negative) can affect physical wellbeing (recovery).

·        Laughter (emotional) can promote healing (physical)

·        Spiritual and emotional factors (hopelessness, despair, grief, loneliness, lack of fulfillment/purpose) can affect physical well-being (healing, low (NK) cell activity).

·        Toxins in the physical environment can affect physical health (asthma, heart attacks), emotional health (depression) and mental health (Alzheimer’s).

·         A state of chronic spinal flexion (poor physical posture), chronic disease or disability can cause devalued self-identity (emotional/spiritual).

To promote or maintain well-being it is important to understand what factors affect your health and why you get sick.  The 'whole person' approach to well-being requires you to look at every part of your life and how those parts interact with or affect each other. All aspects of your being; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual require the same attention and respect. Remember, you were created not only as a physical being, but also a mental, emotional and spiritual being.  Ignoring imbalances or deficits (indicated by symptoms) in any one aspect of your being can lead to serious imbalances and health implications.

How Do You Assess Your Well-being?

Whole Person Well-being:

If you are looking for quick symptomatic relief without healing, this is not the wellness approach for you. There are no instant fixes (including pills or supplements) for total well-being. Understandably, symptomatic relief can be a requirement during healing, but only 'in combination with' addressing the underlying cause of the symptoms.

The 'whole person' approach to wellbeing requires you to look at every aspect of your life and how those aspects interact or affect each other.

Stress, your brain and your health     

Although a normal part of every person's life, chronic or unmanaged stress in your personal life (eg. life stresses, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holmes_and_Rahe_stress_scale , caregiver stress http://www.psychosomaticmedicine.org/cgi/reprint/61/4/420.pdf ) or resulting from your work (National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety) can be detrimental to overall health.  The body can gradually become sensitized to stress and you can be unaware of the dangers to the brain and body (Psychology Today:  Stress - It is worse than you think).  It is possible to experience an allergic type of reaction to stress like a pollen allergy.  Chronic stress can permanently change the brain changing the way that your brain responds in the future http://medicmania.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html .

Is stress, physical, chemical or emotional, the underlying cause of your health condition?  Maybe you are experiencing a combination of all three.  In his book, When the Body Says No:  The Hidden Cost of Stress, medical doctor and bestselling author of Scattered Minds, Gabor Maté, shows that emotion and psychological stress play a powerful role in the onset of chronic illness.  Martin L. Pall has a theory that a "stressor-initiated" biochemical mechanism - the nitric oxide/peroxynitrite (NO/ONOO-) cycle - may be responsible for CFS, FM, and other syndromes. According to the American Stress Institute, www.stress.org, stress is America's Number 1 health problem and the basis for many diseases.  "Many of these effects are due to increased sympathetic nervous system activity and an outpouring of adrenaline, cortisol and other stress-related hormones.  Certain types of chronic and more insidious stress due to loneliness, poverty, bereavement, depression and frustration due to discrimination are associated with impaired immune system resistance to viral linked disorders ranging from the common cold and herpes to AIDS and cancer.  Stress can have effects on other hormones, brain neurotransmitters, additional small chemical messengers elsewhere, prostaglandins, as well as crucial enzyme systems, and metabolic activities that are still unknown."

In an article entitled 'Anxiety, Stress and Your Complexion', Eva Sztupka-Kerschbaumer  reports "One study found that chronic stress causes deterioration in the skin's permeability barrier, which protects us from the environment and is essential to our survival."  This means that anything that touches your skin (water, personal care products, laundry and dry cleaning products, clothing) or enters from the air (indoor or outdoor pollution, air fresheners, perfumes) can enter the body more easily.  A healthy permeability barrier at the skin, the body's first line of defence, is crucial to protect you from the toxins in your environments.

The body's amazing ability to heal!

Your complex bodies were created by God with amazing preprogrammed abilities including the ability to heal  from within, on all levels.  When you cut yourself the body will mount a healing response which will initiate healing.  A scab will form over the cut to protect it for a specified period of time during the healing process. The properly functioning body, initiates the same type of automatic healing response on a larger scale throughout the body on a daily basis as required.

The second step is to believe!

Believe! 

The most important ingredient in healing is to visualize your body as a healthy body.  Part of believing is asking and expecting.  What is your picture of "perfect  health"?  See yourself as the healthy person in your picture.

"My body can heal itself",

after all that is how you were designed by the Creator!

According to the Merriam Webster’s dictionary a diagnosis is:

“the art or act of identifying a disease from its signs and symptoms, investigation or analysis of the cause or nature of a condition, situation, or problem  <diagnosis of engine trouble>”

Regardless of what your condition is or whether you are living with a diagnosis, this is a very important step.  A diagnosis is based on a collection of symptoms and/or test results that are commonly found together. 

According to the Merriam Webster’s dictionary a prognosis is:

“the prospect of recovery as anticipated from the usual course of disease or peculiarities of the case”.

(Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary [MW], 2007)

When a persons receives a diagnosis, which usually comes with a projected prognosis, they often believe that their outcome is 'written in stone' as stated in the prognosis.  It is important that you believe that your outcome is "what you believe it will be"!.  A hundred unique and different individuals presenting with the same or similar symptoms and test results could be given the same diagnosis and prognosis.  Each person’s outcome may well be different.

Focusing your attention and seeing an image of what you are focusing on is what is known as visualization. A manifestation of your thinking, visualization can be very effective when used to promote healing and general well-being. Customized Visualizations for Improved Well-being

Visualizations can be customized using information from test results, your research and answers to questions you ask your healthcare provider.  From these you should have a basic understanding of your body parts and how they should normally function (eg. anatomy, physiology, biochemistry) and also a grasp of the specifics of your condition. The following is an example of a customized visualization developed using information from test results and information provided by your doctor or your research.

You may wonder what the significance of belief, hope, desire and faith are in terms of well-being.  Whether you consider these in a religious context or simply according to the dictionary meanings, they are powerful intertwined ingredients in any quest for improved well-being.  Faith is 'a firm belief' in something. Hope is 'expectation with confidence'.  Belief is 'firm conviction'.   When you believe, you 'expect' that something will probably happen. When you have hope you 'expect' with confidence.  When you have 'faith' you believe firmly without any proof.  Desire sets off the process of natural healing. It is a potent catalyst.

Any combination of the abilities and tools above can be very therapeutic and have the potential to greatly increase overall well-being.  Improved well-being is available to everyone.

What is healing?

Healing is an inner process through which a person's body achieves a state of homeostasis. Healing  takes place at the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.

Why do we get sick?

We are routinely exposed to factors that interfere with the natural processes of the body , compromising communication and energy flow within the body:

  • Physical, chemical and emotional stressors.
  • Emotional traumas and issues that arise from time to time (e.g. extreme anger, fear, worry, sadness, grief, guilt or jealousy that we experience but cannot process and release effectively).

How do chemicals affect your body?

You may remember doing experiments in chemistry lab in high school and even have images of chemical reactions that had “gone wrong”.  What happens when the chemicals from what you eat, what you inhale and what you absorb through your skin come into contact with your organs, systems, body chemicals, hormones or with other chemicals already present in the body from previous exposures or those entering your system throughout your day? 

Everything is a chemical. Chemistry is the study of matter and its interactions with other matter. Anything made of matter is a chemical.  Any liquid, solid, gas, pure substance, mixture and even water is a chemical.  When chemicals are combined there is a new chemical formed with different chemical properties, some of which can be harmful or toxic.

What can you do to get the toxins out of your body?

Toxicity occurs when the toxins we take in and those that our body produces can not be broken down and eliminated. As we age the body's ability to eliminate toxic substances can slow down. Damage to the body's detoxification system from various causes can also prevent proper detoxification and lead to toxicity. Toxins can be recirculated into the bloodstream or stored in the liver, body fat or other parts of the body. These types of buildups and problems throughout the body can contribute to the development of chronic symptoms, serious illnesses, multiple chemical sensitivities and allergies. Many chemicals are so widespread that we are unaware of them. They can enter through the foods we eat, the air we breathe and through absorption through the skin.  The skin actually breathes, and as our largest organ can absorb a large quantity chemicals and VOCs from the air around us, the water we bathe in and toxins from products used on our bodies and our clothing.  Proper functioning of the whole body is essential to encourage detoxification. Detoxification and maintaining a healthy body can be promoted by the following:

Promoting Natural Detoxification & Well-being:

  • Drink lots of filtered water, per day. Clean water is a priority for detoxification. Use a water filter (like a Brita) to filter your water and change the filter often.  Use a filter on your shower head and tap as well. http://curezone.com/foods/waterpage.asp

  • Movement.  Move regularly throughout your day.  ie. walking. 

  • Eat plenty of fresh (pesticide, additive and preservative free) vegetables and fruit.  To reduce the toxic load on the body it is important to reduce the chemicals in our foods, and consume organically grown foods and meat products. Add vegetable juices.

  • Maintaining a healthy body pH is very important in healthy detoxification and overall well-being.  Cancer is reported to not be able to survive in an alkaline pH.  The American diet tends to keep the body in an acidic pH level.  Drugs, detoxification, disease and toxins are a few of the factors that can change your body's pH level.  Know what your pH level is.  A home test pH kit is available at pharmacies and health departments.  You can adjust your pH by choosing different foods from the acid/alkaline forming food charts.  (from muscle response testing results on numerous clients I have found green tea to be acid forming - try white tea )  Artificial sweeteners cause imbalances and have been linked to cancer(use Stevia instead).  Acidic pH can result in disease.

  • Limit sugar and sugar derivatives, and compounds that can easily be turned into sugar (i.e. processed & white grain products and alcohol).  Microorganisms and cancer thrive on sugar.  Excess sugar disturbs your pH balance and weakens the immune system (http://www.healingdaily.com/detoxification-diet/sugar.htm).

  • Eat unprocessed food.

  • Avoid all preservatives, additives, artificial flavours and colours.

  • Eat whole grain products.  Avoid rice and corn products. Avoid flax seed products.

  • Avoid genetically modified foods and eat toxin-free and hormone free foods if possible.

  • Have regular bowel movements. Fat-soluble toxins are secreted through the bile duct.

  • Get plenty of fresh clean air.  Open the windows in your homes and at work and change the air often if the air quality where you live is good.  If the air quality is poor use an air purifier, plants and environmental air sponges to clean the air. VOCs may be present in the air you are breathing.

  • Eliminate negative stressors and get plenty of exercise.

  • Avoid using a microwave or irradiated foods.

  • Use only “toxin free” or natural personal care (Cost of Beauty), laundry, household cleaning, lawn care, home renovation and building products.  This is an extremely important step! Detoxifying Herb Baths

  • Herbal Detoxifying Bath recipes are specifically designed to promote the body to eliminate the toxins. Years of accumulated toxins can be eliminated.
  • There are individual herbs and other ingredients that are best suited to promote the removal of specific toxins. These recipes have been developed as the result of using neuromuscular biofeedback on clients with various conditions, occupations and exposures. Many clients indicated feeling better even before completing the series of baths. Keep in mind that detoxifying can be accompanied by unwanted symptoms depending on the quantity, type and interaction of toxins being eliminated.
  • A series of detoxifying herbal baths at specific intervals will aid in promoting the body to eliminate the toxins slowly and safely over a period of approximately 6 to 12 weeks.  The baths will also promote healing. Keep in mind that in the holistic approach to wellness, treatment is not symptomatic, which means that symptoms may not be alleviated until further healing has been achieved. You may need to continue on with symptomatic relief until further healing has taken place.

It is important to be under the care of a qualified healthcare practitioner while you are detoxifying.  There should be 3 days between any type of detoxification therapy (eg. herb bath, sauna, internal detox).  Your body needs 3 days in between to make fine adjustments between therapies.  It can be very dangerous to speed up detoxification.  Certain types of detoxification may be contraindicated due to age, medications or other health conditions.

BodyFeedback™ Interview and Therapy

As part of a holistic therapy, neuromuscular biofeedback  and a comprehensive scientific protocol are used to assess organs, endocrines, body parts or factors that are a health priority.  Your brain has recorded information about everything that has ever happened to you and knows exactly what is causing your symptoms, much like the "black box" (computer) in an airplane records flight information.
