Taking Control of Your Health
you desire better health? Do you have a 'healthy idol' that you
secretly envy? Can you picture an image of the 'healthier you' that
you would like to be? The quest for
well-being, which includes good health, is a 'life long journey' not merely
a destination. The
best way to improve your health is to learn as much as you can about the
factors that affect your body, your health and well-being; and what you can
do about those factors.
Your mother probably told you to eat your vegetables when
you were little so that you would grow up to be big and strong and
the father of modern medicine, was quoted to say:
“If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and
exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest
way to health”.

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine
but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and
in the cause and prevention of disease”.
“Health is defined in the WHO’s Constitution as a state
of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity”. World Health Organization, 2007.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of well-being: “the state of being happy, healthy, or prosperous”.
mother, Hippocrates and Thomas Edison all had a common belief, that good
nutrition is an important part of well-being. Many words describe
well-being. Many factors contribute
to and interfere with a person’s well-being.
Understanding the Whole
Person Well-being Equation
A properly functioning body, in a state of homeostasis (balance) on all
levels, is considered a healthy body. From the time you were conceived
you were exposed to or affected by elements capable of harming you and
interfering with the natural processes and needs of your body on all
levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The processes and
the communication required to maintain normal function are necessary to
prevent illness and to feel well. Whether the cause of the interference
is unhealthy diet, nutrient deficiencies, lack of proper rest, chronic
stress, injury, microbes, environmental factors, inadequate nurture or
psychological trauma; it can lead to damage or compromised cell, organ
and system function leading to imbalance on the physical, mental,
emotional and spiritual level.
To promote and
maintain whole person well-being you must understand all factors with
the potential to impact your health. Issues involving one part of your
being can directly or indirectly influence the others. The Health by
Design well-being approach addresses all aspects of well-being.
