Taking Control of Your Health Do you desire better health? Do you have a “healthy idol” that you secretly envy? Can you picture an image of the “healthier you” that you would like to be? The quest for well-being, which includes good health, is a “life long journey” not merely a destination. The best way to improve your health is to learn as much as you can about the factors that affect your body, your health and well-being and what you can do about those factors. What is Well-being?
Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, was quoted to say: “If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health”. The inventor Tomas Edison stated that: “The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease”. “Health is defined in the WHO’s Constitution as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. World Health Organization, 2007.
Your mother, Hippocrates and Thomas Edison all had a common belief, that good nutrition is an important part of well-being. Just as there are many words that describe well-being, there are also many more factors that contribute to and interfere with a person’s well-being. "An Holistic Approach" A Natural Approach to Wellness The state of your wellbeing, including the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects, is the result of your genetics, your environment and the condition of your body. Genetic and environmental factors can directly or indirectly affect your body. Imbalance or distress in any aspect of your being can affect the other aspects. Each aspect requires the same amount of respect, attention, response and dealing in terms of well-being.
How do the individual aspects of well-being impact the other aspects? The BodyMind Connection: Scientific studies undertaken by neuroscientist Karen Bulloch in the late 1970s revealed direct neurological pathways between the brain and the immune system. Additional studies confirmed that the two systems communicate with each other by chemical messages. PNI (psychoneuroimmunology) researchers believe that emotions that affect the brain can also affect the immune system response. Anything that affects one aspect of your being can have a corresponding impact on the other aspects of well-being. · Feelings (depression, loneliness, stress, grief) can affect physical wellbeing (weakness, low Natural Killer (NK) cell activity) causing illness. · Thinking (positive or negative) can affect physical wellbeing (recovery). · Laughter (emotional) can promote healing (physical) · Spiritual and emotional factors (hopelessness, despair, grief, loneliness, lack of fulfillment/purpose) can affect physical well-being (healing, low (NK) cell activity). · Toxins in the physical environment can affect physical health (asthma, heart attacks), emotional health (depression) and mental health (Alzheimer’s). · A state of chronic spinal flexion (poor physical posture), chronic disease or disability can cause devalued self-identity (emotional). To promote or maintain well-being it is important to understand what factors affect your health and why you get sick. The "whole person" approach to well-being requires you to look at every part of your life and how those parts interact with or affect each other. All aspects of your being; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual require the same attention and respect. Remember, you were created not only as a physical being, but also a mental, emotional and spiritual being. Ignoring imbalances or deficits (indicated by symptoms) in any one aspect of your being can lead to serious imbalances and health implications. Reinventing Medicine, Beyond Mind-Body to a New Era of Healing, Dr. Larry Dossey, M.D., The man considered one of the pioneers of mind/body medicine provides the scientific and medical proof that the spiritual dimension works in therapeutic treatment, exploding the boundaries of the healing arts. www.dosseydossey.com Molecules of Emotion, The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine, Dr. Candace B. Pert, PhD., Medical researcher Candace B. Pert explores the science behind mind-body medicine in the highly acclaimed Molecules of Emotion . Drawing on the findings of her revolutionary experiments, Pert explains that the mind and body are not two separate entities, but are one interconnected system that she calls the "bodymind." Smartly written in easy-to-understand language, Pert demonstrates how important these findings are to how we treat illness and how meeting the emotional needs of patients is just as vital as treating their physical symptoms. Forward by Deepak Chopra. In the 1900s, Emil Coue, the French pharmacist was cited by European physicians as having cured tens of thousands of patients. He accomplished this through a simple positive affirmation, "Every day and in every way I am getting better and better". (How to Practice Suggestion and Autosuggestion, Emil Coue, Pg. 102, Kessinger Publishing, 1996). For more information on scientific evidence that thoughts can shape your life visit http://affirmativethinking.wordpress.com/science-of-affirmations/ . In Thought Life: Dr. Caroline Leaf, a brain researcher from South Africa says ‘87% to 95% of the illnesses that plague us today are a direct result of our thought life. Toxic waste generated by toxic thoughts causes the following illnesses: diabetes, cancer, asthma, skin problems and allergies to name just a few. Consciously control your thought life and start to detox your brain!’ www.drleaf.net Sacred Healing: The Curing Power of Energy and Spirituality, C. Norman Shealy, M.D., PH.D. In 1971, Shealy, a neurosurgeon, founded The Shealy Clinic, the first clinic dedicated to holistic pain and stress management. He points to the growing body of research that documents the mind-body connection, and how our thoughts, life-view, and intention can influence the body in both positive and negative ways. According to Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D. a brain scientist who suffered a stroke at the age of 37, "the focused human mind is the most powerful instrument in the universe, and through the use of language, our left brain is capable of directing (or impeding) our physical healing and recovery." New York Times bestseller, My Stroke of Insight. The brain/mind is a powerful tool. How Do You Assess Your Well-being? To assess your well-being it is important to make use of all of your senses including your intuition, the inner perception that we all possess but often do not listen to. Learn to "Stop, Look and Listen" to the messages that you body is telling you. I can assure you that they are there. If you do not pay attention your body with find a way to say "no". (When the Body Says No, Gabor Maté) For more information on intuition: Awakening Intuition, Using Your Mind-Body Network for Insight and Healing by Mona Lisa Schulz, M.D., PH.D. 'In a groundbreaking, major work on intuition, health, and brain science, Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz gives innovative, fresh, and exciting new ways to tap into intuitions that not only hold the power to improve our health, but also save our lives. Intuition, Dr. Schulz maintains, is not magical or mystical, but a real, down-to-earth capacity we all possess that is as natural as all our other senses. Functioning as a transmitter of messages from a non rational, unconscious level of our brains, intuition provides information to guide our actions. Awakening Intuition teaches readers how to hone their receptivity to intuitive messages by attending to the clues of their bodies -- including symptoms of physical disorder and disease, dreams, internal visions or voices, body sensations, and emotional reactions. Dr. Schulz recounts her own extraordinary experience as a psychiatrist, clinical practitioner, and brain researcher.' The following are some of the factors that indicate a state of well-being. How do you rate? (click on the links for more information on the health impact associated with the factor)
Everyone is at a different place on of their well-being journey. Everyday is a new opportunity to work on the factors that need change. Beating yourself up about the past is a waste of energy and precious time. For more information on how you can improve your well-being view the introduction to the Health by Design video or order the Healthy by Design workbook. Whole Person Well-being: If you are looking for quick symptomatic relief without healing, this is not the wellness approach for you. There are no instant fixes (including pills or supplements) for total well-being. Understandably, symptomatic relief can be a requirement during healing, but only "in combination with" addressing the underlying cause of the symptoms. The "whole person" approach to wellbeing requires you to look at every aspect of your life and how those aspects interact or affect each other. Your Health The state of your health is the result of the interaction of your genetics, your environment and the state of your body. Genetic and environmental factors can directly or indirectly affect your body and every aspect of your health.
Stress, your brain and your health Although a normal part of every person's life, chronic or unmanaged stress in your personal life (eg. life stresses, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holmes_and_Rahe_stress_scale , caregiver stress http://www.psychosomaticmedicine.org/cgi/reprint/61/4/420.pdf ) or resulting from your work (National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety) can be detrimental to overall health. The body can gradually become sensitized to stress and you can be unaware of the dangers to the brain and body (Psychology Today: Stress - It is worse than you think). It is possible to experience an allergic type of reaction to stress like a pollen allergy. Chronic stress can permanently change the brain changing the way that your brain responds in the future http://medicmania.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html . Is stress the underlying cause of your health condition? In his book, When the Body Says No: The Hidden Cost of Stress, medical doctor and bestselling author of Scattered Minds, Gabor Maté, shows that emotion and psychological stress play a powerful role in the onset of chronic illness. Martin L. Pall, PhD, is generating excitement in scientific communities worldwide with his theory that a "stressor-initiated" biochemical mechanism - the nitric oxide/peroxynitrite (NO/ONOO-) cycle - may be responsible for CFS, FM, and other syndromes http://www.prohealth.com/library/showarticle.cfm?id=8071&t=CFIDS_FM . For more information on his theory: Explaining 'Unexplained Illnesses': Disease Paradigm for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Fibromyalgia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Gulf War Syndrome and Others. Dr. Cai Song, internationally known researcher at the University of British Columbia and co-author of Fundamentals of Psychoneuroimmunology was quoted "I am convinced that Alzheimer's is an autoimmune disease. It is probably triggered by chronic stress acting on an aging immune system". According to the American Stress Institute, www.stress.org, stress is America's Number 1 health problem and the basis for many diseases. "Many of these effects are due to increased sympathetic nervous system activity and an outpouring of adrenaline, cortisol and other stress-related hormones. Certain types of chronic and more insidious stress due to loneliness, poverty, bereavement, depression and frustration due to discrimination are associated with impaired immune system resistance to viral linked disorders ranging from the common cold and herpes to AIDS and cancer. Stress can have effects on other hormones, brain neurotransmitters, additional small chemical messengers elsewhere, prostaglandins, as well as crucial enzyme systems, and metabolic activities that are still unknown." According to Peter Politser, Neuroeconomics: A Guide to the New Science of Making Choices, enlargement of the amygdala (the emotional part of the brain) may be related to heightened aggression, increased fear conditioning and fear related memories, and increased anxiety. He also reports that chronic stress decreases the number of dendrites in the prefrontal cortex which play a role in fear extinction. For more information on how stress can affect your body visit http://books.google.ca/books?id=4LrcFzlTfTsC&pg=PA174&lpg=PA174&dq=chronic+emotional+abuse+increases+the+size+of+the+amygdala&source=bl&ots=Q-GoPP3y8c&sig=rV4gAQNG1rOiCWNSZugrTB1Sj3o&hl=en&ei=5PnxSaqUA42-MqCVrbwP&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3#PPA174,M1 and http://www.minddisorders.com/Py-Z/Stress.html . In an article entitled 'Anxiety, Stress and Your Complexion', Eva Sztupka-Kerschbaumer reports "One study found that chronic stress causes deterioration in the skin's permeability barrier, which protects us from the environment and is essential to our survival." This means that anything that touches your skin (water, personal care products, laundry and dry cleaning products, clothing) or enters from the air (indoor or outdoor pollution, air fresheners, perfumes) can enter the body more easily. A healthy permeability barrier at the skin, the body's first line of defence, is crucial to protect you from the toxins in your environments. According to Eileen Luders, lead author and a postdoctoral research fellow at the UCLA Laboratory of Neuro Imaging, people who consistently meditate have an extraordinary ability to experience positive emotions, retain emotional stability, engage in mindful behaviour and have reduced levels of stress. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/090512134655.htm Healthy emotional intelligence helps you to cope and bounce back from stress, adversity, trauma, and loss. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, manage, and use your emotions in positive and constructive ways. It’s also about recognizing the emotional states of others and engaging them in ways that feel good to all and create mutual safety, trust, and confidence. http://www.emotionalintelligencecentral.org/video/intro.html The following link provides additional useful information on stress management. http://www.helpguide.org/mental/stress_management_relief_coping.htm The links to the right provide additional useful information including information on factors that promote greater well-being. Optimum health is available to everyone! Every day is a new opportunity to get back on to the path of well-being. It is never too late! Come along on the 'Health by Design' Well-being Journey! (click here) The body's amazing ability to heal! Your complex bodies were created by God with amazing preprogrammed abilities including the ability to heal from within, on all levels. When you cut yourself the body will mount a healing response which will initiate healing. A scab will form over the cut to protect it for a specified period of time during the healing process. The properly functioning body, initiates the same type of automatic healing response on a larger scale throughout the body on a daily basis as required. Detoxification, another normal ongoing body process, is an important part of proper functioning and healing. For information on ways to promote detoxification and healing and for recipes for herbal detoxifying and healing herb baths, scroll down the page or go to the link "herb sources" on the right. For a customized detoxifying and healing program unique to your individual body email naturalwellbeingretreatspa@yahoo.ca . Each person is uniquely individual due to age, medications, health status and other reasons. Thus each person's detoxification and healing program will be uniquely different. It is important to be under the care of a qualified practitioner during detoxification. One of the first steps in the holistic approach to healing our bodies is to “clean house”.
The second step is to believe! Believe!
Tell yourself and believe that: "My body can heal itself", after all that is how you were designed by the Creator!
“Chemicals have replaced bacteria and viruses as the main threat to health. The diseases we are beginning to see as the major causes of death in the latter part of (the 1900's) and into the 21st century are diseases of chemical origin.” Dr. Dick Irwin, Toxicologist, Texas A&M University www.lesstoxicguide.ca/index.asp http://www.nottoopretty.org/print.htm Detoxifying Herb Baths
![]() BodyFeedback™ Interview and Therapy As part of a holistic therapy, neuromuscular biofeedback and a comprehensive scientific protocol are used to assess organs, endocrines, body parts or factors that are a health priority. Your brain has recorded information about everything that has ever happened to you and knows exactly what is causing your symptoms, much like the "black box" (computer) in an airplane records flight information. Your brain is more complex than high tech computer systems. The BodyFeedback™ System uses the brain and body's complex computer operating system in combination with neuromuscular biofeedback to make an assessment. Resynchronization of the body's natural energy flow and communication within the body (using a variety of energy balancing techniques) enables the body's systems to function at optimum levels. The internal energy and communication balancing focuses the brain and the immune system's attention, much like a magnifying glass, on the areas that are a health priority. The body’s natural healing process is thus rapidly accelerated. In the case of allergies and intolerances biofeedback therapy is used to stop the body from mounting a "skewed", "abnormal" or "excessive" response to a substance.
